Democracy in Torfaen is a sham. General Council meetings are stage managed by the officers and any discussion or dissension is considered inappropriate and usually not allowed. The party system as operated by the labour group means that any discussion and decisions are done at a closed group meeting before the main meeting and labour members are then required to vote as they are told and not speak without permission. The labour leader has enormous power but appears to be subservient to certain individual officers.

there is a democratic deficit. as an interested party to the development of trevethin comprehensive school at penygarn (our house is clearly affected) we weren't informed of the meeting, many others also affected, i only found out because of a neighbour showing me a letter. i attended a council meeting thursday 26th june. all is carefully stage managed to limit what the individual can say or ask. questions emailed to the proper officer were lost and certain people who wanted to ask questions couldn't. as for the lip service they pay to democracy...arrogant planning officials and how many people relish having to go to a chair at the top table facing the council chamber to ask questions..arroganyt planning offficials ridiculing your questions..a shambles

Planning would definitly appear to be 'corrupt'. Chief Officer expects Cllrs to accept all his recommendations. I have had first hand experience in this with Tesco and all my neighbours on our street who share a direct boundary with the store. We were forbidden from attending Tesco and local residents monthly meetings.... We were told by D Smith no need to object, 'it is a done deal', and this even before the plans were submitted. Now I have a Tesco store merely feet from my bedroom window, blocking my light and shining security lights into my house all night. Not to mention cctv cameras invading my and my wife's privacy, thank goodness we have no children. Ombudsman just ignored. SHAMBOLIC!
